'Summer the First Time'

The Sun was searing, relentless. Its fingers of heat found every sweaty wrinkle of the body and broiled them. The crowds hemmed the sea in, holding it back from the sand by sheer weight of numbers. They trudged along the beach encumbered by mats and bags, food and books, the cool box - all were, by their feel, turning in to one of the denser elements - like plutonium.

All they wanted to do was stretch out on the beach in the sun, they had joked as they drove through Dorset -If the beach is full we can go on to the nudie bit. Now they found themselves like remnants of the lost patrol, ankle deep in gritty sand full of the detritus of an uncaring public, surrounded by squalling brats and teenagers who bullied and squabbled noisily with each other, like members of a newsgroup. As they got further from the car the crowd thinned out , but as they did so they took up more space, just as if they were practising for a fight with Germans on a Spanish sun terrace.

Then the pair came to a wooden sign that said something like:

Looking at each other, they stepped over....

In the first 100 yards there seemed to be a little difference, but then as they progressed further they found that it was as if a cone of silence had been brought down over the land, the crowds were smaller, the radios blared less, the kids - brown all over - were quieter and less raucous. He gets up later and walks to the sea, revelling in the feeling of walking through the air and water and not just next to it. Rachel has also stripped off after a few minutes, at first hiding her modesty with her cross stitch, but she too succumbs after a while and spends the rest of the afternoon either swimming or lounging. At one point she even walks to the teas wagon.
